Weekly trade breakdown
There was a slight decrease in Bordeaux’s trade share last week, dropping to 41% compared to the previous week’s 41.6%. However, two Bordeaux wines still secured the top positions in the list of most actively traded wines.
Champagne, on the other hand, has experienced a notable increase in trade share, rising to 12.1% compared to the previous week’s 7.5%. Two Champagne wines have made it to the top-traded list this week as well.
The United States had a successful week in terms of trade share, showing the largest increase. It surged to 7.5% from just 3.8% the previous week. This growth can be attributed to wines such as the 2018, 2014, and 2017 vintages of Promontory, as well as Screaming Eagle Sauvignon Blanc 2018 and Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2020.
On the other hand, regions such as Burgundy, the Rhône, Tuscany, and Piedmont witnessed declines in their regional trade shares. Piedmont recorded the most significant decline, dropping to 4.4% this week compared to 7.6% the previous week. Tuscany’s trade share fell to 8.4% this week from 12.7% last week, despite Tignanello 2020 being among the top-traded wines.
The “Others” category also experienced a slight rise in trade share, increasing from 3.9% last week to 4.9% this week.
This week’s most traded wines
As mentioned earlier, the two highest-ranking wines this week are both from Bordeaux, specifically from Saint-Emilion: Château Pavie 2014 and Château Ausone 2018. These estates were previously classified as Grand Cru Classé A for these vintages in the Saint-Emilion Classification, but Ausone withdrew in 2022.
Château Pavie 2014 was initially priced at £1,700 per case and received a score of 94 points from Neal Martin. Its most recent trade occurred at £1,996 per case, slightly below its current Market Price, which has risen by 17.5% since its release.
Champagne also made its presence felt among the top-traded wines this week, with two wines securing spots: Armand de Brignac Ace of Spades Brut Gold NV and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2012. Taittinger 2012 received high scores of 95+ points from William Kelley and 96 points from Antonio Galloni. The wine’s most recent trade took place at £1,242 per case, which is 5.9% below its current Market Price of £1,320 per dozen.
