Like most weeks, Bordeaux lead trade by value last week, accounting for 39.2%. This is a step back from the previous week’s 43.5%. Château Cheval Blanc 1998 was the only Bordeaux wine in the weeks top traded rankings.

Champagne saw an increase in trade, representing 20.0% of the market by value, surpassing Burgundy. Three wines from the Champagne region were among the top 5 traded wines of the week.

Tuscany also experienced a rise in trade, reaching 7.6%. Notable contributors were wines like Tua Rita, Redigaffi 2020, and Tignanello from the vintages of 2019, 2020, and 2016.

Positive trends were observed in the USA and the ‘Others’ category, both experiencing increases in trade share, reaching 3.7% and 5.1% respectively.

On the contrary, Burgundy saw a decline in trade, dropping to 19.5% from the previous week’s 22.8%. The Rhône and Piedmont regions also had minor decreases in trade share.

The top-traded wines for the week were dominated by Champagne, with Louis Roederer, Cristal 2008, and 2013 and 2012 vintages of Dom Pérignon occupying the leading positions.

The majority of Louis Roederer, Cristal 2008 trades were in magnum (150cl) bottle format cases, which trade at premiums compared to regular (75cl) bottle cases, due to their scarcity and popularity. The last traded price of a case of magnums was 45.92% higher than the last traded price for a case of regular 75cl bottles.

The Champagne 50 index, which tracks the price performance of the most actively traded champagnes, showed remarkable resilience, experiencing only a 0.2% dip in July, in contrast to the broader market decline reflected in the Liv-ex 100’s 3.1% decrease. This suggests that buyers are returning to the Champagne market after a previous 10.4% pullback this year.
