This week on the wine market

Daily Markets 28/10/2022

The Italy 100 index – which tracks the price performance of the 10 most recent vintages of the five ‘Super Tuscans’ and five other leading Italian producers – has increased 48.0% over the past 5 years.

As covered last week, the average price for a wine in the Italy 100 is currently £4,004. Below we take a look at how that figure is calculated by breaking down the average price for each of the 10 wines.

In 2019 Italy accounted for 8.8% of the total market trade, jumping up to 15.1% in 2020, and 15.4% in 2021. Trade share for 2022 currently sits at 11.8%, a considerable drop from the previous 2 years.. However, the brand power, wide availability and relative value has seen trade increase for certain wines within the index.

The two wines that have experienced the largest price growth so far this year are the two cheapest. Gaja’s Barbaresco is the top performing wine in the index up 16.6%, closely followed by Tignanello up 16.5%.

Below we take a look at the current prices and performance of the last 10 vintages of Tignanello. You can see this type of data for any wine using the BordeauXchange Index Register.

Weekly trade breakdown

This week, Bordeaux’s trade share increased the most, rising from 34.9% to 43.8%. Numerous high-value trades including 4 cases of 12×75 Mouton Rothschild 2000 that went for over £80,0000, helped the Bordeaux market.

Champagne trade decreased from 25.3% to 18.7%. It did, however, surpass Burgundy’s weekly trade share for the second time this month. Quite something considering the average price for a case of Champagne is 10x cheaper than Burgundy.

Despite Piedmont’s percentage decreasing, trade for other regions remained stable from last week.

Finding value in Petrus

Trade for Petrus exceeded £200,0000 this week alone. As one of, if not the, most prestigious wines in Bordeaux Petrus commands extremely high prices. Nevertheless, we believe value can still be found.

Below we highlight the market value and critic score of the most popular Bordeaux vintages on the market today, alongside their recent price performance. Our pick? The most mature, a competitive score, and an all-round value gem, it has to be the 2005.
