Price increases across the board in September

After running flat in August the broadest market indicator, the Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000, increased 2.1% in September, closing at 484.28. The Liv-ex 50 and 100 also posted gains last month of 1.0% and 1.9%.

Like it was in August, currency was the top story in September. The US dollar’s value increased steadily throughout the month, reaching historic highs against the British pound and maintaining parity with the Euro.

Then, at the back end of September, new Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng presented his mini-budget, which caused the value of the British pound to plunge to a 40 year low of $1.04. Despite managing to end the month at $1.12, the current value of the British pound is at its lowest since the 1980’s.

MONTHLY TRADE BREAKDOWN

Bordeaux’s share of trade increased 8.3% from August to September. Trade for ‘on’ vintages was high, the 2019, 2018, 2016, 2010 and 2009 were the most traded vintages by volume. Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Petrus and Chateau Lynch Bages were the most active labels.

Italy’s trade share continues to decline from its 2021 highs, The Super Tuscans (Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto, Tignanello and Solaia) accounted for 75.6% of all Tuscan trade last month.

Burgundy was the only region that experienced a large decrease ins its share of trade, dropping from a monthly record high of 36.30% in August to 23.30% in September.
